Some winter tunes

This is a set that Ted likes to play together Sheehan’s into Cameronian. Here are session style versions of these two: Sheehan’s and the Cameronian . Here is a reasonable set of notes for the Cameronian.

Gary likes the Boy in the Boat, which you can hear here starting at the 1:23 mark. You can also hear a bagpipe version here.

I have been playing Devlin’s – a nice Bm jig. You can sample Kevin Burke playing here.

Nice listening

I really enjoyed this clip. In the jig set, the second and third are two Sean Ryan jigs that I enjoy playing. Cory plays them also so next time he is at the session, I will pull them out.

Sound of Sleat

No, this does not refer to what you hear when you wake up in an ice storm.

Here is Capercaillie playing the Sound of Sleat , and here is the same tune on cittern.

To Ireland

This is Farewell to Ireland (or to Erin). There are very many poor versions on the web – this is better than most – a Spanish session.

And here is the same tune by Barney McKenna on banjo.

Here are the notes to Farewell to Ireland.

While looking for it, I found this Trip to Ireland, bu McGoldrick and McSherry, that Christy should love. The notes are here. The second tune is Jutland.

And Christy has found The Dub Reel by these same characters. An approximate set of dots is here: The Dub Reel

Keepers

Here are some tunes that I have posted before but which I’d like to re-post so that they don’t get lost:

Christy asked that I re-post the Tar Road to Sligo

A video for Shiela Coyle’s has appeared since I posted the notes below.

I’d like to re-post the two Sean Ryan jigs since I like them a lot.

Here is the Green Mountain, which has become one of my favorites to play. I pair it with George White’s Favorite

Here is Jizaique – from Lunasa

Bloomsday Bar

In Copenhagen, I have gone twice (so far) to the session in the Bloomsday Bar. The session starts at 3:00 on Sunday – and runs for 6 hours! The folks were welcoming, and they all spoke perfect English (like all Danes). I even met a woman who went to Hampshire College and lived in Amherst for 5 years after that. There were around a dozen players – at a high level. I was amazed at how wide their repertoire was. Of the tunes that I knew, they were on the more obscure side. So when it was my turn to start, I played some of lesser known tunes – and they knew every one. Even after 6 hours of free beer they were playing well.
